Guestbook

Welcome to the Guestbook!

I'm always eager to read your comments about my books and stories, so please feel free to pitch in. Here are a few things for you to know:

1) I answer the messages here personally.

2) No message shows up here until I actually answer it. To prevent spam and other inappropriate postings. So there will sometimes be a delay before your message posts, especially if I am traveling.

DEEP APOLOGIES! Due to a glitch in the Guestbook I have not been receiving notifications of new messages for some months now. I should have spotted this, but I have been so busy with so many things that it went right by me. But yesterday (February 9) I started wondering about it, and when I went into the Guestbook registry I was horrified to find dozens, maybe even hundreds, of unanswered messages. I'm beginning to work on taking care of the backlog, but it's going to take me some time. If you left a message, my apologies for not having responded. (By the way, this is a good reason to fill in your email when you leave a message. It does NOT appear in the public guestbook, but it does mean that you will get a notification when I answer you.)

Dear Mr. Coville, Our class loved the book Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher. It had a lot of details about the objects in the Magic Shop. It's full of action like Jeremy running from Mary Lou. We liked that the book was about dragons. Will Jeremy every see Tiamat again? What is it like writing a story, book, or novel? Why didn't you keep on going on with the story when Jeremy and Tiamat were in differ worlds?

Friday, September 25, 2015 at 9:30:00 AM

Bruce Coville replied on Friday, September 25, 2015:

Hey, Gang -

Delighted to know how much you enjoyed JEREMY THATCHER.

Writing a book is fun, hard work, sometimes frustrating, sometimes wonderful when you suddenly get a new and great idea!

I didn't keep on going with the story because I thought I had told all you needed to know. Jeremy had done his job and raised Tiamat properly. Anything after where I ended would really be starting a different story.

Dear Bruce Coville, We thought Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher is a magical story. We found it interesting that Tiamat is invisible to everyone except Jeremy and Mary Lou. Why did you make Tiamat invisible? We liked the ending because we thought Jeremy lost Tiamat forever, but he didn't! If you wrote Jeremy Thatcher 2 what would the book be about? From: Aleksey, Ella, Joseph, Teresa, and Lilian

Friday, September 25, 2015 at 9:29:00 AM

Bruce Coville replied on Friday, September 25, 2015:

Hey, Guys -

Really glad to know you enjoyed JEREMY THATCHER. I think out of my more than 100 books, that is the one that will last longest after I am gone!

I needed to make Tiamat invisible because of her great size. But I didn't do that until I found a precedent in dragon folklore. In the first version of the book that I sent to the editor she was only the size of a dog at the end of the story. The editor told me to go back and make it better! ;>

I have an idea for another book, but I think it would likely be an adult book. It would be that there is something wrong in the world of the dragons, and Jeremy, Ms. Priest, and at least three other dragon hatchers would have to go to the dragon world to help out.

Hi Bruce Coville! My teacher Mrs. Allen did a class letter to you. I have a question. What was your first book? I read my books out loud and they don't seem right and I read your paper and I'm still not sure could you give me some advice? I also love your books!

Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at 2:57:00 PM

Bruce Coville replied on Tuesday, September 22, 2015:

Hi, Ava -

My first book was a picture book called THE FOOLISH GIANT, illustrated by my wife, Katherine.

Reading your work out loud is a great way to catch mistakes and places where things are not clear. The biggest advice I have right now is READ READ READ READ READ! The more you read, the more your brain picks up (without you even realizing it) about how stories and paragraphs and sentences work and should be formed.

All best,

BC

My mother was a 4th grade teacher in Baldwinsville,NY and introduced hundreds of kids to your books, myself included. I've written to you before to thank you for countless hours of enjoyment and felt the need to say it again. I'm disappointed that there are no new Nina books, but plan to work my way through some of your newer books to console myself. Hope you enjoy writing as much as I enjoy reading!

Bruce Coville replied on Tuesday, September 15, 2015:

Hi, Susan -

Thanks for this lovely message.

I don't know if I've told you this, but there was supposed to be a fourth Nina Tanleven book. I had about a third of it written, but for a variety of reasons I had fallen very far (very far!) behind on the deadline, and the publisher finally canceled it, saying that they felt the series was out of date. I would love to finish it someday. On the other hand, I was having a real struggle with the plot. And the series is very much locked into a certain spot in time, because of the historical aspects.

I do enjoy writing . . . though sometimes it can be a real struggle!

Thanks for checking in.

Hello Mr. Coville! I'm sure it was over twenty years ago I discovered your books in a school library. My favourite ones as a child were Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher, and Into The Land of the Unicorns (I had no idea it was a series at time!) Someday I hope to read these books to my kids and share your magic with them. Keep on entertaining young dreamers, good sir.

Hi, Amber -

Thanks for this, and I am delighted that you have been such a fan of the Chronicles. I am so sorry that print copies are hard to find. But I have to tell you I have nothing to do with how many copies are printed . . . that is entirely up to the publisher, Scholastic. They are the ones who decided to let the book go out of print, and to never issue a paperback edition.

Please feel free to write to them and complain. I can tell you that I am personally furious and broken-hearted about this situation!

Dear Mr. Coville, I left a message here almost two years ago to the day to thank you for the Shakespearean adaptations you wrote, and how much my then six year old son was enjoying them. I just wanted to let you know that we've continued to enjoy them and today I had the pleasure of finding my now 8 year old son and my 7 year old son curled up on the couch together, one reading Macbeth and the other reading A Midsummer Night's Dream. I've recommended them countless times to other parents and to a person they all say how wonderful they are. I can't tell you how much I wish there were more of them (actually, you probably do know - I get the feeling you would have done all the plays if given the chance) but I'm grateful for the seven that do exist. We're currently trying to find them for sale (I know they're out of print but we keep looking - we've found the above two so far. We wanted to get Hamlet but the cheapest we could find was somewhere around $50) and I hope we can find all of them eventually. Sad that the publishers wouldn't produce any more because they are such valuable books and you did such an amazing job bringing them to life for kids. I am so very glad that I stumbled across them two years ago. I also have a 5 and a three year old, so there are going to be more Shakespeare fans (and Bruce Coville fans!) soon. With thanks again, Shaindy Lander

Hi, Shaindy -

Thanks for this lovely message. The image of the two boys curled up and reading those books (which I see "in my mind's eye" to quote Hamlet) thoroughly delights me.

I wish there were more titles, too. I thoroughly loved writing those books. You're right - I probably would have done all the plays, given the chance. (Well, okay, I might have skipped Titus Andronicus" . . .)

Look for a separate message off line.

I just read a quote of yours in an article that I am reading for a class.. You said, “Somehow the idea seems to have gotten loose in the country that in addition to the rights of speech, religion, and the press we now have a new constitutional right: the right to never be offended by anything.” It is refreshing to hear this. Mr. Coville, I've been a fan of your work for 25 years; I'm 31 now, and have been reading your books since I was in the 1st grade (way back in 1990). I signed your guestbook back in 2002 when I graduated high school, and even wrote you a letter about the "Bruce Coville's Books of" series (I was hoping you would release Book # 13, but alas Book of Magic II was the last in that series). I never got a chance to thank you for responding to my letter, and for the book that you sent. That made my day!! I'm excited to say that my nephews, 6 & 8, were going thru my old books and stumbled across my Bruce Coville section. Needless to say your fan club is growing by 2 more people :) Thanks for all of the work that you do in helping build the imaginations of the young and old. I hope this entry finds its way to you and puts a smile on your face, as you have put smiles on mine for decades. Be blessed Jefferey Hunter

Hello Friend, I am writing today to tell you of my joy in finishing reading Diary Of a Mad Brownie, With supporting documents. I read it all in just a few hours and will be reading it again to Riley as part of our summer reading. The book was funny and silly and at times a great adventure story. I liked the bit about Shakespeare and also when Angus found out about the "intermagoogle" (love that word). I also like that the second entry in Angus's Diary is on my birthday September 20 and really like when Angus tames Bubbles. I truly loved this book very much and wanted to congratulate you on writing another excellent story. After a pause to get some house work done I will be off to start reading Goblins on the Prowl.

Hi, Chrissy -

Thanks for this! You are the very first reader to get back to me about the book, so I especially treasure these comments.

The references to DRAGONSLAYERS were much more pronounced in my first version. Bwoonhiwda was accompanied by Queen Wilhelmina's daughter, who was named Pink. But the editor felt that the book was overpopulated and someone had to go. Alas, it was Pink who got the ax. But I'm thinking about bringing her back in a story of her own someday.

All best,

Dear Bruce Coville, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. When I was in elementary school I HATED reading. I wouldn't touch a book with a thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole if I did not have to. The main reason behind this is the fact that I have dyslexia, which made reading really difficult for me. It was your books that changed my life. In the 6th grade my teacher had the class read the first book in your Rod Albright alien adventure series. I absolutely fell in love with your book, and I found myself reading ahead at home. After I read the first book, I made my dad take me to the library to get the rest of the series and I even ended up finishing the whole series in the time it took the class to read the first book. The day I came to class and realized that, is one of the proudest moments in my life because of how impossible I thought I would be for me. That day was over six years ago, and I’m still reading. I can’t even imagine how horrible it would be if I never realized how great reading is. The love of reading your books gave me, helped me overcome part of my dyslexia, for which I can’t thank you enough. -Loryn

Loryn -

This is the kind of response a writer for young readers lives for. Truly, I could not hope for any better affirmation of my work than this. I am so delighted to know that my fanciful stories were part of your journey to reading.

Thanks for sharing this.

Humbled and honored,

Hi Bruce, Since the Unicorn Chronicles is finished have you thought about making a new chronicles with one of the characters from the Unicorn Chronicles? Sorry if that sounds confusing. I think it would be great to read a series about Grimwold or Thomas The Tinker, how their story began. I hope all is well, ~Amanda

Hi, Amanda -

That was my original intent when I designed the series . . . that I could go on and tell stories about many of the other characters, up and down the history of Luster. Unfortunately, the publisher (Scholastic) has not been supportive of this. I bear some responsibility, as it took me so long to finish the third and fourth books. But there are so many more stories that I wanted to tell!

Hello Mr. Coville. I was unknowingly a big fan of yours when I was little. I was a ravenous reader and would read anything I could get my hands on in grade school. I didn't realize until later that so many of my favorites were written by yourself. My favorite book as a kid was the first Unicorn Chronicles book and I didn't find out about there being more (besides A Glory of Unicorns) until I was in college. I read them and then waited for The Last Hunt to come to paperback... and waited... and waited... and now I am worried that I'll never be able to read this as the price for the hardback is rather unreasonable. Is there anything that can be done? I am disabled with muscular dystrophy so I have plenty of time on my hands.

Hi, Josh -

Thanks for this message. I am truly sorry about the unavailability of LAST HUNT. Scholastic, for reasons I have never understood, failed to release a paperback edition. I am still angry and hurt by this myself.

Do you ever listen to audiobooks? LAST HUNT =is= available in audiobook format, recorded unabridged by myself and a full cast.

All best,

I started reading the series in... 5th? Grade. I actually found the first book while cleaning out my bedroom from my childhood. After reading it again I got online so I could start purchasing 2-4. Im a bit shocked at how expensive the 4th one is!!! Is there any reason why is 40-45 dollars? The 2nd and 3rd ones are only 3 or 4 dollars in some places! I really want to finish the series because I remember the first time reading that book, my class had gone on a field trip but for some reason I couldnt go. So I spent my day in another class losing myself in it! Hope to hear from you.

Hi, Mandy -

I am also shocked and angry about the cost of the fourth book. The reason for this also angers me. It is that, for reasons I cannot understand, Scholastic never released a paperback edition. You'll notice that the high prices you're seeing are all from re-sellers. That is because the book is out of print and copies are hard to come by.

It broke my heart that Scholastic was so cavalier about this. And I think they have been manifestly unfair to the fans who have been waiting to read this book.

I am so sorry for this situation.

Sincerely

Bruce Coville

Hi Bruce! I bought "A Midsummer Night's Dream" for my daughters a number of years ago and went this past week to buy the remaining adaptations you've been a part of... they are next to impossible to find! I've used them in the past when teaching elementary students the different stories of Shakespeare and LOVE them. All my classroom copies have diasappeared over the years and I really want copies for home... any chance of them being reissued/republished?

Bruce Coville replied on Wednesday, June 03, 2015:

Hi, Shelayne -

Writing those Shakespeare adaptations was one of the greatest joys of my career. Alas, except for MIDSUMMER, they're all out of print now. I do have copies of ROMEO & JULIET, TWELFTH NIGHT, and WINTER'S TALE on hand in the office. (The latter two are not listed on the website as being available as I only have one sales copy left of each.) If you'd like to purchase one or all of them send an email to info@brucecoville.com so we can work out logistics.

I'm delighted that you think so highly of the books!

I just want to say thank you. When I was in the 2nd grade, I had to enroll in ESL and your books were a great driving force in helping me improve my reading and writing skills. Space Brat, Rod Albright Alien Adventures, and Bruce Coville's Book of were some of my favorites. It was two months ago that I begun to ask myself what were my passions. What I found out is that I did not hate writing but I just needed to write about subjects that were interesting to me. I love that writing gives me the freedom to explore all the possibilities in the world. So far, I have written about 90 pages on a novel I'm working on. I will continue to write and work at my current job until I feel my standards are up to far. So yes, you did inspire this early 30's something to think out the box. I now know what my passions are. One is to write and inspire people just like you. Thank you.
