Welcome to the Guestbook!

I'm always eager to read your comments about my books and stories, so please feel free to pitch in. Here are a few things for you to know:

1) I answer the messages here personally.

2) No message shows up here until I actually answer it. To prevent spam and other inappropriate postings. So there will sometimes be a delay before your message posts, especially if I am traveling.

DEEP APOLOGIES! Due to a glitch in the Guestbook I have not been receiving notifications of new messages for some months now. I should have spotted this, but I have been so busy with so many things that it went right by me. But yesterday (February 9) I started wondering about it, and when I went into the Guestbook registry I was horrified to find dozens, maybe even hundreds, of unanswered messages. I'm beginning to work on taking care of the backlog, but it's going to take me some time. If you left a message, my apologies for not having responded. (By the way, this is a good reason to fill in your email when you leave a message. It does NOT appear in the public guestbook, but it does mean that you will get a notification when I answer you.)

Hi, Gabby -

I am so happy that you LOVED the unicorn series!

In addition to the four books of the Unicorn Chronicles, I have edited two collections of unicorn stories: THE UNICORN TREASURY and A GLORY OF UNICORNS. Each one has a unicorn story by me, as well as stories by many other authors.

If you want to send your book to me I will be happy to sign it for you. However you must also send a stamped, self-addressed envelope that I can use to return it. You can find my address on the contact page of the website.

Thank you for being such a faithful reader!!

Hi mr. bruce my name is maria and i will be 9 years old tomorrow. I love your alien and unicorn books. Though i am told i am wierd cus i am a girl and alien is for boys. I have a question and i hope you can help. Though mom says you cant but she always told me it never hurts to ask. I was wondering if there is another way to get your voice books on unicorns. I was to have them for my birthday tomorrow but that was before daddy went to heaven Mommy says she cant pay them now since we have to move in with nana and pappi who live in washington and we live in florida mom says we are driving that will take years. I was hoping to supise her if i could get the voice maybe then she will smile like she use to instead of crying all the time since like me she grew up on the unicorns and i want to see her happy again i would gladly trade my cake and books and my few presents i see wrapped for those voice books do you like ice cream cake? O before i forget why are your voice books so pricy mom says your 4th book costs almost 5 times what your first unicorn voice book costs. While the other 2 our double the price of your first at least thats what the phone store says. Mom didnt even know there was a 4th book Thank you mr bruce

Bruce Coville replied on Thursday, January 26, 2017:

Hi, Maria -

First off, no one has the right to tell you what is weird for you to read! Heck, MY TEACHER IS AN ALIEN is told first person by a girl named Susan Simmons. I think you should read whatever you want!

I am sorry that I can't get you the voice books (we use the term "audiobooks") - certainly not in time for your birthday. We no longer make the CDs here.

However I can tell you some good news. IF you can play an MP3-CD, even the fourth book (which cost so much as a "voice book" because it is four times as long as the first book - 15 hours!) is not nearly as expensive as your Mom thinks. You can get it on Amazon for only $17! And the first book in the series is only $10.

I hope you had a Very Happy Birthday! Good luck on your trip to Washington. Safe travels!!

Your friend,

Bruce Coville

Hello Mr.Coville! I believe I signed this before but I honestly cant remember nor did I find myself while scrolling through the entries. I've been a huge fan of your work, especially The Unicorn Chronicles series. To a point where your books inspired my own Unicorn character who goes by the pseudonym Lumina. (You can see her profile on my website.) I have a signed copy of Song of the Wanderer and it means so much to me. You're one of my idols as a writer and I strive every day to improve my story writing so that one day I might publish a book of my own. It has saddened me that I cannot seem to find a reasonably priced copy of The Last Hunt, so that I might finish my collection of the series. But I digress. You are amazing, thank you for your works and keep being awesome!

Bruce Coville replied on Thursday, January 26, 2017:

Hi, Sarah -

Thanks for this message. It delights me to know that the Unicorn Chronicles have inspired you to create your own unicorn character.

I'm truly sorry that you're having a hard time obtaining THE LAST HUNT at a reasonable price. The reason for that is simple, and something I have no control over: Scholastic put the book out of print without ever doing a paperback edition (something that still baffles and saddens me). So it is a fairly rare item, and the only copies available are from used booksellers, or booksellers who had extra copies, and are now profiting from the books scarcity. A reseller such as that will price the book at what the market will bear; it is their right and something an author has no control over.

The good news is, I have regained the rights to the books, and my agent is working to get them back into print in new editions. It will be a while before that can happen, but I have high hopes!

All best,

With regrets,

Bruce Coville

First, thank you! I am and have always been a voracious reader. I would say avid but that is simply not strong enough a word. I used to not do homework and just read, to the point where my mother had to take away everything but my school books when I was young. The point of this is I have been reading Tamora Pierce's books since the 90s when I was old enough to read them. I do mean I have been reading them since, as in over and over again and again. The Circle of Magic series is like a visit with old friends, and I make that visit several times a year. I recently started a full-time job, yikes! Going from a hither and yon professor to a 9-5er was tough, what was toughest was the commute. I am from Massachusetts and we are born with road rage I fear. Your audio recordings of Tamora Pierce's books are what get me through those terrible mornings. I have to say I have listened to the books more times than I can count using fingers and toes now! But they are wonderfully written and the full cast audio productions are so wonderfully directed and perfect produced. I love these books and your recordings allow me to "read" and drive at the same time. I have started listening to the other works you have produced and I find them to be just as entertaining and cannot wait to "read" more. I am a little disappointed that "Shatterglass" has not been recorded as it is my favorite. But I am patiently waiting to see what you all do next. I hope you will expand your collection of books. As an adult with the soul of infinite youth I assure you it brightens my life. :D

Bruce Coville replied on Tuesday, January 24, 2017:

Hi, Jessica -

Many thanks for this message, which literally filled me with joy. (I am passing a copy along to Tammy as well.)

Producing the audio versions "Circle of Magic", sometimes directing, and always performing as Niko were some of the most joyful experiences of the artistic aspect of my life.

Unfortunately, Full Cast Audio was more successful artistically than it was financially, which was why we haven't produced the third and fourth books of "The Circle Opens" yet. But Tammy and I talk about it often. The problem now is not simply finances but time, both because of our writing schedules, and because of how much time it would take to gather new talent, as many of our actors have moved on to other things. But it is a constant dream of ours to revisit that series on audio.

Thanks for taking the time to send this message. It truly does mean a lot.

Good luck with the new job . . . and be careful on those Massachusetts roads!

Hello! I absolutely loved the Magic Shop series when I was a kid (I'm 25 now) and after recently rereading all the books I'm really happy that they're still great. Do you have any plans to add to the Magic Shop series in the future? I'd love to see more of Mr. Elives and honestly, I was super excited when Juliet Dove came out. I've found myself thinking of different magic shop scenarios a lot lately. Thank you so much for what you've done.

Bruce Coville replied on Tuesday, January 24, 2017:

Hi, Arianna -

Thanks for this. Though I've published over a hundred books now, the Magic Shop titles remain among my very favorites. I feel like something about the shop pulls out the very best in me.

I did have a proposal for a sixth book, but I am sadly at odds with the series publisher so I don't know if anything will ever happen with that. But I really would like to go back and see what's happening at the shop sometime.

Thanks for your kinds words.

I'm a 17 year old student, and I still find your books fantastic reads! I've been an avid reader for almost ten years, and in thattime I've read all your Rod Albright adventures, your My Teacher is an Alien series, and the majority of the single works you'vecontributed to such books as Books of Magic (I and II) and the Wizard's Dozen. I've recently finished Oddly Enough, and believe it tobe one of your best works. I write ameteurly myself and agree with your views on the moods of writing habits.I'm writting this on a perticular question, though. The first story in Oddly Enough was titled "The Box", and with the same themesefound in another work, "Bear at the Gate." My question, after commenting on how much I enjoy both, is this: have you done moreof these "heavenly works", or is this to be a forever craving? Keep up the excellent work!

Bruce Coville replied on Tuesday, January 17, 2017:

Hi, Normaali -

Well, this is a message to lift a writer's heart! Thank you very much.

As to your question: "The Box" is one of my stories. "Bear at the Gate", however, was written by Jessica Amanda Salmonson.

"The Box" was, I think, a once-in-a-lifetime story for me. I have not written anything else with a "heavenly" aspect. Well, I did once try to write an entire novel set in heaven. It was a terrible idea, though: when everything is perfect, there's no story!

Thanks for being such a faithful reader . . . and for this message!

Okay, so as a young child I loved reading the Unicorn Chronicles. I was looking at my bookshelves the other day and decided to reread the series. (I love your work) Are there any more of your books you recommend for young adults? I am currently a YA writer (well, one in the making anyway). Are you going to write any more novellas or books for the Unicorn Chronicles? I know you must get thousands of messages every day, and go to tons of signings. How do you find time to write? Thanks. Bye.

Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 3:07:00 PM

Bruce Coville replied on Tuesday, January 31, 2017:

Hi, Darby -

Hmmm. Depends on how you define "young adults." The Unicorn Chronicles actually was meant to be a middle grade series, though books three and four definitely crossed over into YA territory.

If you haven't read JEREMY THATCHER, DRAGON HATCHER I think you might enjoy it. GOBLINS IN THE CASTLE is a wacky fantasy. And maybe ALWAYS OCTOBER, for starters.

I am hoping to do more stories in the world of the Unicorn Chronicles. Scholastic put the books out of print, but we've got the rights back now and my agent is working on making them available once more. If they find a new audience I would love to write additional stories!

A great question about "how do you find time to write?" It's a constant struggle. It's more a matter of making time, TAKING time, than of finding it. And there are always other things that don't get done.

Best of luck with your own writing . . . may you find much success with it!

All best,

I would like to begin by saying "The Monsters of Morley Manor" is my favorite book that you have written. My mother first read it to my brothers and I back in 2009 when we were quite younger. It was an interesting experience, because at the time we were living at my grandfather's house, which was old, creaky, and possessed a mildew scent - similar to Morley Manor. When she read the book to us, it felt as if we were actually there. Ironically enough, my grandfather's house is supposed to be demolished soon, which makes me sad, but reminds of what almost happened to Morley Manor in the book. I believe two years after that, I read it myself for the first time. And finally, the tail end of last year and the beginning of this year, I read the story again. I have to say, I noticed more than I remembered - probably because my mind was too simplistic to comprehend the depth of the story those several years ago. Before Morley Manor, when I was in third grade, I read your Magic Shop books. I also read "Moongobble and Me" when I was in the fourth grade. Your stories have actually inspired me to write - I have been writing since 2012. I really liked the name "Morley" in "The Monsters of Morley Manor". In fact, I stole the name "Morley" for the title of a story that I wrote last year. I know, pretty pathetic on my part, but rest assured, it has nothing to do with Morley Manor. I also would like to say that the descriptions in your stories are some of the most vivid ones I have come across throughout every kind of literature - despite not being lengthy. I have a question too, have Ray Bradbury, Edgar Allan Poe, and H.P. Lovecraft influenced you as a writer? They are some of my favorite authors (Something Wicked This Way Comes by Bradbury reminds me of a book you would write for an older audience). There is more I would like to say, but because of the minimal space of this comment box, I should probably stop. I appreciate any time you spend reading this, Benjamin---

Bruce Coville replied on Sunday, February 26, 2017:

Hi, Benjamin -

Thanks for this message, and apologies for not replying sooner. I just went to check out your website ... it is extremely cool!

It delights me that you are so fond of MORLEY MANOR, which is almost certainly the weirdest book I ever wrote. (When my mother finished reading it she looked at me and said, "Bruce, you are getting stranger and stranger." Which made me very happy.) The fact that you first heard the story in a house that felt like Morley Manor is pretty cool.

About reading . . . I loved Bradbury, Poe, and Lovecraft. I'm sure all three of them had some impact on my writing, but I would say that of that trio it was probably Bradbury who had the most profound impact.

All best,

My name is Lucas. I am a third grade student at Johnson Elementary in Fort Thomas, Kentucky. We are working on an author study project this year and I chose you because your books look fun to read. I also had to pick three of your books to read. I chose Aliens Ate My Homework, I left My Sneakers in Dimension X, and Aliens Stole My Body. So far I have completed Aliens Ate my Homework. I liked reading it and I really liked the ending when the Aliens gave Rob a small volcano after they destroyed his big one. What gave you the idea to write this book? Also, what does BKR stand for? I am reading I Left My Sneaker in Dimension X now and I think it is really good. Are you working on any new books now? Why did you become a writer and do you like it? Sincerely, Lucas

Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 10:00:00 AM

Bruce Coville replied on Friday, January 13, 2017:

Hi, Lucas -

Thanks for this message. I'm delighted that you have chosen me for your Author Study, and particularly delighted that you are focusing on the Rod Allbright books. Rod is the only character I ever based totally and completely on myself, so I have a special fondness for that series.

The beginnings of the book are somewhat odd. I had had a great success with "My Teacher Is an Alien" and I wanted to do another alien story (I have always been fascinated by aliens) and the title "Aliens Ate My Goldfish" popped into my head. I thought it was kind of hilarious, and had the idea that the cover image would show some little aliens broiling a goldfish over a campfire on a kid's dresser.

Wow! What a terrible idea!

Then I had the idea of changing it to "Ate My Homework", playing off the famous kid phrase "the dog ate my homework." That seemed less interesting to me but when I tried it out on friends and kids in schools they thought it was WAY better than the "goldfish" idea.

Part of where the story came from is that when I was a kid my best friend Mike (he appears as "Mickey" in the book) and I used to make up stories about tiny imaginary aliens.

I am indeed working on a new book . . . which is, oddly enough, an old book. It is called - for now, at least - THE WINDLORD'S HORN, and it is a sweeping adventure story that I started writing over 40 years ago. I love the idea, and it will not let go of me. (In case you haven't figured it out, I am very stubborn about ideas!)

Why did I become a writer? The most simple answer is also the most true one: I loved - LOVED - books so much that I wanted to make my own.

Thanks for reading my stories.

I have always wondered if you have ever been to Canada, Alberta because I always wanted to meet one of my favorite authors. I was also wondering if you would ever consider writing a sequel to Jeremy thatcher dragon hatcher? If so why or why not? Thank you for your time, Natasha.

Hi, Natasha -

I visit Canada every summer, and I have also been to Toronto and Montreal for numerous conferences over the years. I have never been to western Canada, alas, though I would dearly love to.

As to JEREMY THATCHER, I have had one idea for a sequel, but it would be an adult book, which would be kind of weird. Mostly I think the story should stand on its own. I like writing sequels and series, but not all books need a follow up.

I am writing to you to tell you that Riley and I are still working our way through all of your books, we have 33 left to read. This past week during his Thanksgiving break I read him the I was a sixth grade alien series. The stories were delightful but we were sad when they came to an end. We are both wondering what happened with the sixth grade class on Hevi-Hevi. As you know I have recently suffered a loss and I find reading your stories a good way to take a break from reality and a temporary break from my grief. It was a little difficult to do that though with the I was a sixth grade Alien series because of the character Dolores as that was also my mothers name. Do not worry though for I shall be fine. I'm trying to take things day by day and will continue reading to Riley as a way to escape from it all and share in the joy of reading with him. Next we are beginning the Space Brat Series and then will be moving onto The Bruce Coville Books of... Riley said he is most looking forward to The Book of Magic while I am excited to read The Book of Ghost. I wish you an early Merry Christmas and a hope that you have a wonderful holiday season.

I do know about your recent loss, and it means a lot to me that you can find solace and temporary escape in my stories.

Interesting that you will start SPACE BRAT next. I think (hope!) that Riley is really going to like those. I sure had fun writing them.

My best wishes to both of you for the holiday season!

Hi, Jessica -

Thanks for the compliment!

As to DARK WHISPERS and THE LAST HUNT, you are not the only one who would like them to come out in Australia. I would like that, too! My publisher really failed me (and the fans!) especially on that fourth book. I have the rights back and we are working on ways to correct the situation, but it will take time.

Thanks for your interest . . . I really appreciate it!

All best,

Hi Mr. Coville!! Have loved yout books since I was in like 2nd grade. I just reread skull of truth for like the 1000th time (thats how much I love it) and was wondering if you would ever write another book for it. The ending is so open ended and I want more haha. But I understand if you have more importantnprojects! Once again love your work and thank you for being a huge part of my childhood and still continue to be a part of my life today as an young adult!

Bruce Coville replied on Monday, November 28, 2016:

Hi, Alex -

Many thanks for this. Though I think SKULL may well be the best written (in literary terms) of all my books, it has not been the most popular, so it always pleases me to hear from someone who really loves it.

I have thought about doing a book where some of the Magic Shop kids get together, but right now I am not on good terms with the publisher of the series, so it will have to wait a while.

The fact that you continue to read my books now that you are a young adult truly brings me joy.

All best,

I believe when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade you came to my class at Emma Willard School and I have an autographed book. This was a long time ago since I now have a son who is in 2nd grade and I can not WAIT to introduce him to your books. They were a favorite of mine! Thanks so much for helping me share my love of reading with my own children.

Hi, Kate -

Lovely to hear from you. I remember coming to Emma Willard quite well -- partly because I thought your school might be a great setting for a Nina Tanleven ghost/mystery novel!

I can't tell you how it delights me to know that you will be introducing your son to my books! I LOVE being a two-generation author!

Dear Mr. Coville, I am a long-time fan of The Unicorn Chronicles. I first read book one "Into the Land of Unicorns" when I was just a young girl, which inspired a life-long love of the series and a lasting impression on my own imagination, which in turn, lead to the creation of my own fantastical stories, characters, and worlds. I am now well into adulthood and find myself in a sad situation... as a result of moving several times (including between countries!) I no longer have a single copy of the chronicles on my bookshelf. My sadness deepened when my search for a boxed set was unsuccessful :( I was curious (and hopeful) as to whether there are plans for such a thing? Thank you so much for your time and all your wonderful books! A Forever Fan, *Candace W.

Hi, Candace -

Oddly, Scholastic never published a box set. and, to my dismay, they never even put the fourth book into a paperback edition before allowing it to go out of print.

My agent and I are working on getting the series back in print somewhere else, and if we do, I hope that they will consider a boxed set. If we can't find a publisher that wants to pick them up, I'll put them back in print myself, one way or another.

It delights me to know that the books have meant so much to you, and led you to writing stories of your own!

All best,

Long time no write... I've been re-reading the Rod Allbright Alien Adventures quartet, and I have a few questions about certain points. (The third is something I thought of back in 2014, but I got distracted by some other stuff for a few years and never asked about it until now.) * In book 1, it's said BKR has been on Earth for twelve years. But in books 2 and 3, it's said Rod's father only left about three years previous, shortly after the twins were born, and in book 3, he says he left BEFORE BKR arrived. Which timeframe is right? * We know Rod was probably twelve at the start of the series, since he was in sixth grade at the time, and the twins are identified as being only three. But just how old is Elspeth? * In book 3, Seymour names his other half Edgar. Was this a deliberate reference on his part to Rod's favorite author, Edgar Rice Burroughs (whose name he could have heard in Rod's mind)? Thanks in advance! Until next time... Anon e Mouse Jr.

Bruce Coville replied on Monday, October 17, 2016:

Dear Anon e Mouse (Jr.!)

While I'm delighted to know that you're re-enjoying the Rod Allbright Alien Adventures Quartet, you have to remember that it's been about 20 years since I wrote them. So while it is entirely possible that I did bollix up the timeline, there's no way I could actually comment on it without going back to read all four books over again.

I don't think I assigned Elspeth an age, but my intent was that she would be a year or so younger than Rod.

I can't remember if Seymour's use of Edgar was intentional on my part. Even if not intentional, it might well have been a subconscious thing, because I was certainly writing with Burroughs' sense of pacing in mind.

Good to hear from you!

Hi, Tessa, Irene, and Madison -

Thanks for this note. I'm delighted that you enjoyed JEREMY THATCHER so much.

Your question about how I felt while I was writing the book is an interesting one. I can tell you that some of the time I felt confused, or nervous, because I was trying to figure out what should happen next and how to make it work. But there were other times when I did indeed feel joyful - for example, the scene were Jeremy gets to fly!

I am truly glad that the book made you happy!

Dear Bruce Coville, We like your book Jeremy Thatcher,Dragon Hatcher because it is full of adventures and surprises. Our favorite parts are when the dragon, Tiamat, hatched out of the egg and when Jeremy stumbled upon the magic shop. The words were crystal clear in our heads. We could see those pictures. We would like to know how you came up with the story. What inspired you? You have inspired us to write our own magical stories. Please respond to us. Thank you, Bruce Coville.

Bruce Coville replied on Monday, October 10, 2016:

Hey, Cozett, Kaydence, Zane, and Diego! Good to hear from you.

Delighted to know that you enjoyed JEREMY THATCHER. As to how I came up with the story ... well, the first Magic Shop book was called THE MONSTER'S RING. I wanted to write a sequel, but the editor wasn't crazy about the idea. So then I had the thought of writing a book of short stories about the Magic Shop, and one day I sat down and brainstormed to come up with a list of things that you could buy in the shop. One of them was a dragon's egg.

The thing was, when I tried to write that as a short story, the idea turned out to be too big for that form ... it really needed to be a novel. And that's what happened.

Good luck with your own stories!

Bruce Coville replied on Monday, October 10, 2016:

Hi, Irene -

Oh, I'm glad you're reading (and enjoying!) "The Ghost in the Big Brass Bed." Because the book is no longer available in print, I don't hear that much about it these days, but it is one I am especially proud of.

The inspiration for the book came partly from an old house that is not far from my office. I would often walk past it and think, "That would be a good place for a ghost story." But when I actually came to write the book, I decided I needed to move it away from the crowded city block to make it more isolated ... and thus more scary!

Here's a little tidbit you might enjoy: Norma Bliss is a real person, and a friend of mine. She is so lively and funny that I asked her if it would be all right to use her as a character in a book, and she agreed. The only problem was, her character is so big and funny she kept trying to take over the story! ;>

Your friend,
