Welcome to the Guestbook!

I'm always eager to read your comments about my books and stories, so please feel free to pitch in. Here are a few things for you to know:

1) I answer the messages here personally.

2) No message shows up here until I actually answer it. To prevent spam and other inappropriate postings. So there will sometimes be a delay before your message posts, especially if I am traveling.

DEEP APOLOGIES! Due to a glitch in the Guestbook I have not been receiving notifications of new messages for some months now. I should have spotted this, but I have been so busy with so many things that it went right by me. But yesterday (February 9) I started wondering about it, and when I went into the Guestbook registry I was horrified to find dozens, maybe even hundreds, of unanswered messages. I'm beginning to work on taking care of the backlog, but it's going to take me some time. If you left a message, my apologies for not having responded. (By the way, this is a good reason to fill in your email when you leave a message. It does NOT appear in the public guestbook, but it does mean that you will get a notification when I answer you.)

Hello! The Unicorn Chronicles is a series that is near and dear to my heart. I started reading Into the Land of the Unicorns in 2nd grade and read the first 3 books countless times after that. I recently got a copy of The Last Hunt and couldn't put it down. Thank you for taking the time to wrap up the story the way it deserved! Just wanted to pop in and say thanks. :) -Lauren

Hi, Lauren -

A million thanks for this message. I felt terrible about how long it took me to finish the Unicorn Chronicles, but I also felt that it was more important to get it RIGHT than to get it fast. I'm truly glad to know that you think the results justified the time that I took.

All best,

Hi Bruce! I just wanted to say that I've enjoyed your books since I was in kindergarten and I still enjoy them even 17 years later! I immediately fell in love with the Unicorn Chronicles and that is by far my most favorite. Also, you have spoiled me for other audio books with your work with Full Cast Audio. I just have a few questions, have you ever thought about writing any more material in connection with the Unicorn Chronicles? (It's been far too long!) Also, I would like to know, have any of the universes in your series' every crossed over? Thank you for all that you do!

Monday, July 17, 2017 at 6:44:00 PM

Bruce Coville replied on Sunday, July 30, 2017:

Hi, Nessa -

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond. I can't always keep up with the guestbook as I would like.

I am so delighted that you loved the Unicorn Chronicles . . . and even MORE delighted by your response to what we do at Full Cast Audio.

I have indeed thought about writing more in the world of the Unicorn Chronicles. I originally designed the series so that I could go back and write stories about things that had happened in the past, all of them recorded in Grimwold's archive. Alas, things did not work out at Scholastic for me to pursue that idea. But it is not dead! There may be other volumes at some point.

That was a great question about whether any of my universes have crossed over. That has not happened so far, but you've got me thinking about whether it might happen in the future! Thanks for the nudge!

Hi Mr. Coville, Thank you for replying to me! I ended up getting a copy from my local library, and while I am sad that the series is finished, I am pleased about how it ended. It was in the children's section of the library, and I know it is geared towards the younger demographic, but the last book really moved me. I had grown attached to all your characters and am happy I could join them on their adventures. So few books are that well thought out, and The Last Hunt put me in such a good mood. I am still trying to get a copy. Thank you again so replying, so many authors don't find the time to interact with fans! Also, are you planning on releasing new books any time soon? Thanks, Ally

Bruce Coville replied on Monday, July 17, 2017:

Hi, Ally -

I'm delighted to know that you liked the final book so much. I felt very bad about how long it took me to write it, but I really wanted to get it right. I had seen too many series falter in the final book and really let the fans down, and I didn't want that to happen. In terms of sales it would have been better to get it down sooner, i know. But getting it right was more important. So your reaction really does mean a great deal to me.

I have a new book coming out in September. It's called TROLLED and I'm very excited about it!

Hi, Miko - and thanks for this terrific message. Your loyalty to the Unicorn Chronicles makes me very happy. I'm sorry that last book has become so hard to obtain . . . I have never been able to understand why Scholastic didn't do a paperback version! I'm glad to know you managed to get a copy - hope you'll approve of the way everything wraps up!

Hi Mr. Coville, I first want to say thank you for sharing your imagination with the world. Your books are magic. When I was young, I fell in love with your book Juilet Dove, Queen of Love (no pun intended) and the rest of your Magic Shop books. The Monster's Ring was actually assigned reading in an English class one year! I am now re-reading the Unicorn Chronicles. When I first read them, I thought there were only two, but an Amazon search told me there were four! I just finished the third and even though I'm 24, I loved it! Herein the problem lies. The 4th book costs at least $40! I know they are out of print, but do you have any suggestions on how to get it? My local library has it, but I would like it for my personal library. I would love to know if you have any suggestions. Thank you again for sharing your creativity with the world, and adding a little magic to the world :)

Hi, Ally -

Thanks for this lovely message, and my apologies for taking so long to answer. I was on the road for meetings all last week.

I am very sorry about the situation with the last book of the Unicorn Chronicles. For reasons I have never understood, Scholastic never released a paperback edition. I'm still sad and upset about that. There is, alas, no easy way to get a copy of it now . . . though there is an audiobook version that you can get (I recorded it myself, with a full cast, and I think its pretty terrific, even if I do say so myself!)

I do have the rights to the series back, and my agent and I are investigating how to get them back in print. I may just publish them myself. So they will be back, one way or another. I just can't say how quickly it will happen.

All best,

Hi Bruce. I feel honored you remember me. Hmm, I wonder how that person is selling a hardcover book if there isn't one. Sounds like a scam to me. Yes, that would be great, even a hardcover boxed set would be awesome. As for my email address, I don't actually eat snakes. The first three letters are my first, middle, and last innitials and the last part is from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater which is one of my favorite Metal Gear Solid titles. If you're not sure of the franchise it's a video game series which has been going on since 1998 but they had couple of earlier games sort of prequel games in the 1980's. I was born in 1984 but didn't start playing the NES until I was around 4 or 5. Anyway, sorry to ramble but I appreciate you letting me know about The Unicorn Chronicles. Have a great rest of the week. ~Amanda

Wednesday, July 05, 2017 at 1:43:00 PM

Bruce Coville replied on Wednesday, July 05, 2017:

Hi, Amanda -

Oh, all four of the books were published in hardcover. But there was never a uniform edition, with matching art for all four volumes. And even though Scholastic did commission new covers for books 1 and 2 when books 3 and 4 were finally written, they never released a paperback edition of the fourth book. So there is no way to get a matching set of all four titles. At least there is matching cover art for the four of them, by an artist that I loved. But here's how it goes with the final art/artist:

Book 1 - paperback only

Book 2 - paperback only

Book 3 - paperback and hardcover

Book 4 - hardcover only

Which drives my OCD self slightly crazy! ;>

Thanks for the explanation of your email address.

Hi Bruce. I'm one of your fans since childhood who became an adult, I moved from Warwick to Smithfield if that makes a difference in remembering who I am. Anyway, I was wondering if Into The Land of the Unicorns made it to hardcover (with the remade cover art). I wanted to get it and Song of the Wanderer in hardcover to go with The Last Hunt and Dark Whispers which I have in hardcover. I saw a listing with hardcover on amazon but it was from a third party seller and they were charging $500. No joke. Did you know your books are made out of gold? Just kidding. Anyway, thanks. Happy Fourth of July! ~Amanda

Hi, Amanda -

Yep, I remember you . . . partly because of your unique email address!

As to the Unicorn Chronicles, alas, there has never been a unified edition of the four books. This kind of drives me crazy, and I know it irks the daylights out of book collecting fans, too.

The books are out of print now, but I have the rights back and my agent and I are trying to find a route to make them available again.

Nice to hear from you!

Hello again, Bruce! Today I was reminded of the Nina Tanleven books. I immediately came to this site to make sure I had all the names correct. Lo and behold, a 4th book! My inner child screamed out loud. I loved those books so much as a child. I ordered the first 3 right away. I can't wait to share them with my kids when they arrive. Thanks for being a wonderful part of my childhood!!

Bruce Coville replied on Wednesday, June 28, 2017:

Hi, Ida! Just as a note, that 4th title is a longish short story, not a full novel. I do have a fourth novel about half done, but it was being kind of balky and the publisher finally canceled it. I can't blame them . . . my fault as much as anything. I still hope to write it someday.

I am so happy that you remember the Nina books so fondly. They were very important to me, and I love them dearly myself!

Hello Bruce! I am a college student now, but I still love your books, especially the Unicorn Chronicles and the Magic Shop ones. Those books introduced me to fantasy when I was a kid and shaped my love for the genre - unicorns have never been so awesome! Thank you for writing them, you've inspired so many people and brought the beauty of worlds beyond our own to our minds and our hearts. Dear Mr. Coville, As a child and teen, your writing inspired me to many creative endeavors, and opened my mind the whole wide world. Your "I was a Sixth Grade Alien", "Magic Shop", "My Teacher is an Alien", and The Rod Albright Adventures are my favorite books that I own. Even now as I approach 30, I still read them, if only to surround myself in the vivid settings and deep characters you created. I always wondered if you ever thought about continuing Pleskit's adventures as a teenager or young-adult? Or if you ever thought about writing more in the Magic Shop series? Maybe it's the kid in me wanting to continue those awesome memories. As one human being to another, I want to thank you for sharing with the world your incredible gift, and for making my childhood so extraordinary. -Dan Sibble from Ohio

Bruce Coville replied on Friday, May 26, 2017:

Dan! Many thanks for this heartfelt and heart-lifting message. I'm delighted to know that these books have meant so much to you . . . and equally delighted that they continue to be important to you.

Alas, I don't have good news on the Sixth Grade Alien fron. While the other three series you mentioned have been very successful, the adventures of Tim and Pleskit did not find a very large audience. (In point of fact, as far as sales go they were a disaster!) This saddened me, as I poured over two years of my life into writing those books, and truly loved the characters. But for some reason they never caught on. (I think one problem was the cover of the first book, which got the series off to a weak start, alas.)

I do have an idea for another book in the Magic Shop series. I was on the outs with the publisher of that series for a while, but things have settled down, and maybe I'll even be able to write it someday!

I hope all is well in your world. Thank you again for letting me know how much the books have meant to you.

Hi Bruce, I'm in my late 20's now, but I'd like you to know how much I loved your books as a kid, and how much they made me happy and stimulated my imagination. I particularly enjoyed all of your short stories, the Unicorn Chronicles, and the Magic Shop series. I also loved the full cast audiobook versions of your books. I recently purchased "The Skull of Truth" from an audiobook website, and it brought back so many memories. I personally believe (though I haven't read all of your books) that it's one of your best works, and the cast is so good! (Particularly Daniel Bostick as Yorick - so funny and moving! I hope he knows how good he is.) Thank you for helping to create some really great memories for me.

Hey, Nolan -

Thanks for this message. I LOVE knowing that some of my readers continue to cherish the books and stories long after they have (theoretically) "grown out of them."

It especially delights me to know your opinion of SKULL OF TRUTH. It's not my most popular book, but I do think that in literary terms (characterization, themes, imagery, subplots) it may be the best I've ever done. And directing Dan Bostick as Yorick in the audio version was a pure delight.

Thanks for checking in here!

Hi I am a really big fan of your book Dragon of Doom. My favorite part was when Edward was sneaking up on the dragon and when he saw him he was so tiny and that that was the dragon that was watching the acorns. At first I thought that it was a baby learning how to watch the acorns. I really really liked your books.

Am reading the Unicorn Chronicles with some young friends. Book 4 cost me a bunch. I understand why as I read one of your previous replies in your guestbook. Any chance you will make these four books into e-books at some time in the future? Would love to have them this way.

Hi, Mary -

Thanks for this, and my apologies that you had to pay so much for that fourth book. I appreciate your understanding on the matter.

My agent and I are working to find a new print publisher for the books, and it is very likely that any such deal will also include plans for ebook versions. So while I can't make any guarantees right now, it is indeed likely that there will be ebooks of these novels at some point.

Thanks for checking in here.

Hi, Mr. Coville. My best friend and I LOVE your Unicorn Chronicles books. She has all but the Last Hunt. Her 13th birthday is coming up and I wanted to do something special: get her the Last Hunt. But I can't find it anywhere for less than $20 as a paperback! So my question is: why is it so expensive? ~Dru

Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 10:27:00 AM

Bruce Coville replied on Saturday, April 15, 2017:

Hi, Dru - Glad to know that you and your best friend LOVE the Chronicles!

One thing that many people do not understand is that unless a book is self-published, the author has nothing to do with the price. That is determined by the publisher . . . or, in the case of used books, by the bookseller.

The reason THE LAST HUNT is so expensive is that Scholastic, for reasons I have never understood, chose not to release a paperback edition. (Any version you find in paperback is almost certainly an ARC - an "Advance Readers Copy" sent out for reviews.) Because there was no paperback the book is fairly rare, and people who do have it are holding on to it. So used booksellers are charging a lot of money for it.

I have regained the rights to the books, and my agent and I are seeking a new publisher to bring them back into print. But even if we found the new publisher today, it would probably be a year or more before they are available.

I understand your frustration . . . believe me, I am frustrated by this, too! But the matter of availability has entirely to do with the publisher.

I am sorry I do not have better news for you.

Holy cow, me again, sorry. I just wanted to say a few more things. I discovered your books back when I was eleven years old... I'm turning seventeen in a few months. Back when I was in fifth grade your books got me through being bullied and helped me to just relax. It was your books that inspired me to want to be an author, and I've always stopped to just think back to when I read the series. I would hide in my closet at night and read them until I couldn't keep my eyes open. I'm getting older, and I find new books to read all the time. But none of them have stuck quite like yours. Right now I'm writing this thinking back to the fun I had imagining the world you created. I just wanted to say thank you for making my childhood the wonderfully imaginative adventure it was. It seems everyday I stop thinking about the things I did as a kid, but I still think about your books and that's the impact they have had on my life. Just thank you! (P.s. I went back and read my posts on here from 2011, and yikes, I did not know how to spell, lol) Aubrey out!

Hi, Aubrey -

What a hoot, and what a lovely thing, to hear from you six years later!

I cannot tell you what it means to me to know that the books helped you get through bullying. I hate bullies, and bullying, and being a palliative to that stupidity really means the world to me.

As a secret night-time reader myself, I love the thought of you hiding in your closet at night to read my stories.

With all good wishes,

Hi Mr. Coville...I guess I can now call you Bruce since I am 47 years old. I was in your 4th grade class when we did Dragonslayers (Sir Motley). I have ideas for more Magic Shop books, but I am not on very good terms with the publisher of that series right now. With luck, perhaps things will change in the future.

I am doing a research paper, and I decided to research your life, as well as the inspiration behind 3 of your most popular series. I have found articles where you mentioned the inspiration behind 2 of them, but I can't find anything about the third one. What was the inspiration behind the Unicorn Chronicles? Thank you, Zach Talon

Bruce Coville replied on Sunday, March 12, 2017:

Hey, Zach -

Glad to hear from you. The answer to this one is a bit odd, and a bit entangled.

My second picture book, SARAH'S UNICORN, was written because my wife asked me to write after we had gotten turned down on another project. When we first submitted it (1977 or 1978), it was turned down by the editor we were working with because she thought there were too many unicorn picture books.

This was not so. There were unicorn mugs, posters, buttons, and probably toilet paper. But no unicorn picture books. I asked her to look again, and the book went forward, and became a solid success.

As a result, I became, to a degree, the unicorn guy. My next iteration in that guise was when I compiled THE UNICORN TREASURY for Doubleday.

Later, in the early 1990's, Jean Feiwel (the smartest woman in publishing) invited me in to Scholastic to discuss doing a new series. We threw some ideas back and forth, and when she said "unicorn world" I said "I'm you're guy."

It was supposed to be, by contract, a three book series, one a year, about 40,000 words each. As it turned out, it became a 4 book series, each significantly larger than the preceding volumes.

Unicorns . . . sometimes they just carry you away!

Dear Bruce, I'm reading Jeremy Thatcher dragon hatcher in my class & I love it. I really want to know where the idea for this book came from. I also was wondering how long it took to write this book because I would like to write one just like it someday. This is the first book I have loved in a while. Thank you for writing it. Love Ava Pavone 5th grader

Bruce Coville replied on Friday, March 10, 2017:

Hi, Ava -

So glad that you are loving JEREMY THATCHER.

I got the idea because I had already written one Magic Shop book (THE MONSTER'S RING) and loved the shop too much to not go back for another visit. So one day I sat down and made a list of cool things that you might buy in the shop. Total brainstorming session, and one of the best things that came out of it was the idea of a dragon's egg.

I tried to write it as a short story first, but that didn't work. Once I decided to turn it into a book it took me about six months, including the time spent working with my editor to improve it.

Good luck with your own writing!

All best,

Bruce Coville replied on Friday, March 10, 2017:

Hi, Veva and Sia -

I very much loved this message - it delights me to know how much you are enjoying the Unicorn Chronicles.

Alas, I have bad news about THE LAST HUNT. For reasons I have never understood, Scholastic failed to publish a paperback edition. Then they let the entire series go out of print.

I have the rights back, and my agent and I are trying to find a new publisher. So all is not lost. But it will take some time to do that.

I am sorry I do not have better news.

Your friend,

Bruce Coville

I had the pleasure of hearing you speak today at Helen Morgan School in Sparta. I am a substitute teacher and, having adult kids, was not familiar with your books. I just wanted to say I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation! Thank you for a wonderful time!

Hi, Pat-

Thanks for this lovely message. I had a great time at the school today ... but that was largely because the students and staff were all so wonderful and welcoming!

Hi Bruce I'm reading Jeremy Thatcher Dragon Hatcher and I really like it. Also I was wondering if any of your characters or scenes in your books based on you. Thanks :)

Bruce Coville replied on Thursday, March 02, 2017:

Hi, Ray -

Glad you're enjoying JEREMY THATCHER. None of the characters in that book are based on me. However Rod Allbright, of the ALIENS ATE MY HOMEWORK series, is totally and completely based on me!

Hey mr.coville I'm reading Jeremy Thatcher Dragon hatcher in school right now I was wondering how you thought of hiring college students for the audio book. Thanks Jonathan

Bruce Coville replied on Friday, March 03, 2017:

Hi, Jonathan -

What a great question! The answer is pretty simple - I wanted youthful voices for the audio book. I live in Syracuse, and Syracuse University has a great acting school. Which meant that I could hire well trained actors who still sounded like kids. It was perfect for what we were trying to do!

Hello Mr.Coville I'm reading Jeremy Thatcher Dragon Hatcher in Language Ats and so far it has been awsome. The book the Skull of Truth was my favorite. And I was thinking of ideas for books and you should make a book where the characters have to save Mr.Elives and make a cliffhanger and make a second book

Bruce Coville replied on Friday, March 03, 2017:

Hi, Tony -

Glad to know that you're enjoying JEREMY!

I am especially glad to know that you enjoyed SKULL. It is not my most popular book, but I honestly believe that in literary terms it is probably the best thing I have ever done.

The idea of having all the Magic Shop kids get together for an adventure is something I've been thinking about for a long time. Unfortunately, I'm not on good terms with the publisher of the series (they did me some serious wrong) so I'm not sure if that will ever happen.

Hi Bruce Coville. It's me, Adarsh again. I was wondering 3 things: 1. Is the Magic Shop series a bestseller? 2. Have you made any other books than the Magic Shop series? 3. I want to learn more about your history. Can you please make a autobiography about you? Been a pleasure to talk to you, Adarsh 2 P.S. 1. My nickname is Radar. 2. Hi Five to you too (from your previous response)

Bruce Coville replied on Monday, March 06, 2017:

Hi, Radar! (Cool nickname)

I don't know if the Magic Shop series has been officially a bestseller. I can tell you that THE MONSTER'S RING has been selling steadily for 35 years now, which is a rare thing.

Now, as to whether I have made any other books than the Magic Shop series. On this matter I am going to give you some advice, which is that you should not ask a question to which you can very easily find the answer yourself. Since you are writing on the guestbook, you are on my website. And on the website is also a complete list of all the books that I have published!

I am flattered that you want to know more about me. There is also an autobiography on the website!

All best,

Dear Mr. Coville, Hi! I am reading your book Jeremy Thatcher Dragon Hatcher at school. It is a really good book. How did you get the idea of writing about dragons? I also want you to write a sequel to the book. What ideas do you have? I hope you write a sequel!

Wednesday, March 01, 2017 at 2:55:00 PM

Bruce Coville replied on Wednesday, March 01, 2017:

Hi, Shiza -

Glad you are enjoying JEREMY. As far as how I got the idea of writing about dragons, that was easy: I love dragons! So, naturally, I wanted to write about one!

At this time I have no plans for a sequel. Sometimes a book does best to stand on its own.

Bruce Coville replied on Wednesday, March 01, 2017:

Hi, Kaylee -

I'm glad to know you are enjoying JEREMY. Though your idea of writing a book about each person and their personality is interesting, I like to let each of the Magic Shop books stand along, connected only by the shop itself.

Hi Mr. Coville, I am reading "Jeremy Thatcher" in my language arts class. I just started reading it and I love it so far. Right now you are my favorite author. I was wondering if when they get older maybe you could make a short story about how when they get older Mary Lou isn't interested in Jeremy and likes Spess, but Jeremy starts to like her. It would add a lot of suspense. Thank you!

Bruce Coville replied on Wednesday, March 01, 2017:

Hi, Grace -

Glad you are enjoying JEREMY! It's interesting that you would like a short story about the characters, almost everyone else has been asking for a sequel, as in a full book. Clearly you like romantic complications!

Hi Bruce, honor to meet you, but it would thrill me if you could think of making a new book. I think it would be cool if you made a book about your best books combined. They would have to solve a big problem and a solution. Thanks, Nate

Bruce Coville replied on Wednesday, March 01, 2017:

Hi, Nate, a pleasure to meet you.

I have actually considered writing a book where all the Magic Shop kids (there are five of them now) get together. Unfortunately, I am not currently on good terms with the publisher of those books, so I'm not sure if that will ever happen.

Bruce Coville replied on Tuesday, February 28, 2017:

Hi, Lauren -

I'm so glad you're enjoying JEREMY. As to the names . . . well, I made up Jeremy's name. But for Tiamat I did a lot of research into dragon names from the past, in myth, legend, and folklore.

Even though I write fantasy, I do a lot of research in the process!

Hi Bruce Coville. I am reading your book "Jeremy Thatcher Dragon Hatcher " in school. I feel it is amazing. I would like to tell you that I would like you to make a book in where everyone is older and with a different point of view. Thanks, Adarsh

Bruce Coville replied on Tuesday, February 28, 2017:

Hello, Adarsh -

This is very interesting. People have often asked for a sequel to JEREMY, but the truth is the only idea I have had for another story is one where the characters are older. You are the first person to ask for a story like that! So I am sending you a definite High Five!

Hi Bruce! I am an aspiring first time author. My first novel, "Roomies," is about two teenage boys who have fallen in love with one another and endure the challenges of a long distance relationship and separation since one of the boy's, Eli, attends his first year of boarding school. I was wondering who you may recommend for me to send my manuscript ... publisher, agent, editor??? The novel may appeal to the LGBT community, and parents, teens, young adults interested in first time gay relationships and boarding school life. It reads theatrically, and would be amazing in "Full Cast Audio" format!!! Thank you so much for whatever advice you may be able to offer. I am greatly appreciative!!!

Bruce Coville replied on Monday, February 20, 2017:

Hi, Darcy -

An agent is useful and wise at this point in your career. Alas, I do not know an agent who is specifically gay friendly. I can, however, suggest David Gale at Simon & Schuster as a sympathetic editor.

That said, I must be clear that (since I have not read the manuscript) this does not mean that you can use me as an endorsement. But David is a brilliant editor who has published numerous LBGT stories.

Hi Mr. Coville, I'm a junior in high school and I used to absolutely adore your books. I have you to thank for my undying love of science fiction. Six years ago, you visited my elementary school and I had made a post like this one on your website, and you said you'd be glad to talk to me after your presentation. I was super excited, but I chickened out. I never got to meet you and I was so mad at myself. Even today, when I'm no longer reading your books, I still regret the actions of my younger self. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you for helping to make my childhood great and inspiring my love for reading!

Bruce Coville replied on Sunday, February 19, 2017:

Hi, Tara -

Thanks for this message. I take great pride in the thought that I helped instill your love of science fiction. (I just got back from the Boston SF convention, called BOSKONE)

I'm sorry you didn't follow through on that chance to talk to me after my visit. It is a truth of my own life that I regret much more the things I failed to try than the things where I tried and failed.

But guess what? Odds are good that I'm coming to Fairport Elementary again this spring!

A second chance?

All best,
