Welcome to the Guestbook!

I’m always eager to read your comments about my books and stories, so please feel free to pitch in. Here are a few things for you to know:

1) I answer the messages here personally.

2) No message shows up here until I actually answer it to prevent spam and other inappropriate postings. So there will sometimes be a delay before your message posts, especially if I am traveling.

3) Teachers, a gentle request: Please do not have multiple children send me variants of the same message. A group email is much easier to respond to and not such a drain on my time. My thanks in advance for being alert to this.

ilove the the monsters ring what gave you the idea to right it

Hi, Ameer -

Glad you loved that book. I think the main reason I wrote it is that Halloween is my favorite holiday, and I was trying to write the kind of book I always wanted to read on HAlloween night when I was a kid myself!

hello i am wondering what kind of books do you like ?
Reply by Bruce Coville
Oh, I like all kinds of books - adventure, mystery, science fiction, fantasy, biography, history. What I really like, I guess, are books that are well-written, no matter what the subject matter.

Hi, Cheonnie - The book is about a brownie named Angus Cairns. In Scotland brownies are small creatures that help tend a house. Unfortunately for Angus, due to a curse, he is forced to come to America and work with the messiest girl in Connecticut, which drives him slightly nuts. I think it's very funny . . . I had a good time writing it.

Glad you're reading the Unicorn Chronicles. Cara's family is a real mess!

Hi, Emily -

I don't think I understand the title. What is it supposed to mean?

Reply by Bruce Coville
To your bookstore sometime next year!

(I just turned it in to the editor last week . . . there's a lot that still has to be done before we can unleash it on the world!)

I hope you'll like it when it's finally ready!!

Hi, Gabbie -

I live in Syracuse. You will find a lot of information about me in the Biography page of my website.

THE MONSTER'S RING was the very first chapter book that I published, and was the beginning of the Magic Shop series.

Oh, I'm always writing. In fact I just finished a new book last Friday. It's called THE DIARY OF A MAD BROWNIE (With Supporting Documents).

I love all your books. I first started reading/listening to the Unicorn Chronicles in second grade or around then. I even reread them a few times. Your Magic Shop books are also entertaining. My favorite book was Juliette Dove, Queen of Love. The My Teacher series wasn't my favorite, but it was still really creative and interesting. Always October was great too. Do you think you can write a sequel? I'm trying to write a world known book, but I can't seem to ever finish one story. I'm continuously starting new ones. Anyway, I would like some advice on writing. Thanks!

Hi, Sasha -

Thanks for this message - I'm delighted to know that you love the books, and I enjoyed reading which ones are your favorites.

A sequel to ALWAYS OCTOBER is unlikely, alas. The editor I worked with moved to a different company, and then the publisher dumped me (!). So I'll just move on and write other things.

Don't worry about not finishing the stories you start right now. I had the same problem when I was your age. It's something you learn to do as you go along. But here's an important thing: DON'T THROW AWAY the ones you don't finish!! Save them, and you might be able to finish them later. I just sold a story I started writing forty years ago!

For some great advice about writing get a book called SPILLING INK by Anne Mazer and Ellen Potter. Best book for kids who want to write that I have ever read.

Good luck!
