Though I enjoy reading horror books, I am not very fond of ones that are full of blood and gore. I prefer suspense, which I think is scarier. It's very easy to fill the pages with blood splashing around. Takes a great deal more skill to make a reader truly frightened.
For a truly scary book try CORALINE by Neil Gaiman. No blood, but plenty spooky. Also WAIT TILL HELEN COMES by Mary Downing Hahn, a really good ghost story.
