Welcome to the Guestbook!

I’m always eager to read your comments about my books and stories, so please feel free to pitch in. Here are a few things for you to know:

1) I answer the messages here personally.

2) No message shows up here until I actually answer it to prevent spam and other inappropriate postings. So there will sometimes be a delay before your message posts, especially if I am traveling.

3) Teachers, a gentle request: Please do not have multiple children send me variants of the same message. A group email is much easier to respond to and not such a drain on my time. My thanks in advance for being alert to this.

Hi, Max -

Alas, I think the Moongobble series has come to an end. The publisher kind of let things taper off, and it doesn't seem that there will be any more. It's too bad, as I really loved writing them!

We have finished The Weeping Werewolf and we thought it was a very good book. We loved the turn of events that happened throughout the book. The story was so good that we wanted to never stop reading. Some of us are heading to Barnes and Nobles to get some other books in the Moongobble series. We want to know how you come up with ideas in the story. Do you need to travel or study before writing your books. Have a great Summer! Second Grade Boys!

Hey, Gang!

Really glad to know that you liked the book. I also want to congratulate you on writing back without including any "spoilers."

As to how I come up with the ideas . . . oh, gosh, what to say? I have kind of a weird brain. Also, I've read tons and tons of myth, legend, fairy tale, and folklore . . . stories that I can draw on when I write new stories about mischief and magic.

Have a great summer all of you!

The boys are about to read the book titled The Weeping Werewolf. We are writing from Mooresville NC just north of Charlotte. We are very excited to read the book. We are curious why you only spent one year at Duke University. Happy belated Birthday, Mr. Miller celebrates his today. We will write again on Friday and let you know what we thought of the book!

Ahoy, Second Graders!

I hope you will enjoy The Weeping Werewolf! I certainly had a good time writing it.

As to my only spending a year at Duke, there is no single, easy answer for that. My reasons for leaving were a complicated mix of the political and the personal. I was there in 1968-1969, and it is hard for anyone who was not alive at the time to realize what a crazy time it was in our country. Many things were in upheaval - me included.

I have often regretted that I left. Educationally speaking, I had a very, very good year at Duke.

Happy Birthday to Mr. Miller!

I will look forward to Friday, and learning what you thought of the book!

Hi, Ashlyn -

Asking me to name my favorite book I wrote is like asking me to tell you which of my children I love most!

Dear Mr.Coville, My reading teacher Mrs.Heffington persuaded our class to read Goblins In The Castle and we thought it was EXCELLENT! I was reading the other comments on your guestbook and I'm excited to read your next book. It would be great if they make Goblins in the The Castle a movie too. Do you think you will write a different series of books in the future?
Sincerely,
Curious Reader

Hi, Jesiah -

Glad you enjoyed GOBLINS so much.

I'm working on a new series of books now - diaries of different fantasy being and creatures. The first is almost done - it's called DIARY OF A MAD BROWNIE and I think it's pretty funny.

So here I am an excited mom, teacher, and book blogger, because my son asked me to help him write a message to an author like his class did. (Big Shout out to Mrs. Heffington and Mr. Roper's Class)Mr. Coville we can't wait to post a review! Question from Jonathan:"Mr. Coville, you have written a lot of books, which one was your most favorite to write and why?"
Reply by Bruce Coville
Hi, Jonathan -

I like your question about which book was my favorite to write. It's a better and more interesting question than the one I more commonly get, which is "Which book is your favorite."

I've mostly enjoyed writing all my books. There are always tough parts, and spots where I get stuck, but overall I love writing. However I really think the one that was my favorite to write was . . . GOBLINS IN THE CASTLE! That was partly because I had had so much fun with Igor visiting my classroom for all the years I was teaching.

all best,

Dear Mr. Coville,
We just finished reading Goblins in the Castle. It was one of our favorite books we've read all year! We are wondering if you'll ever write a sequel to the book. We want to know more about William, Herky, Igor and Toad in a Cage Castle!! Also, what fun books do you have planned to write next. We can't wait to read them.
Sincerely,
Mrs. H's 4th Grade Class

Ahoy Mrs. Heffington's Class!

I'm SO glad to know that you enjoyed Goblins in the Castle. I had so much fun writing that book. And it might interest you to know that I wrote the first version when I was teaching fourth grade myself.

As to a sequel, I have good news! I just turned in a new book about Igor and the gang. This one is called Goblins on the Prowl. This time Fauna tells the story, and we learn the secret of the stone toad. It's going to be published next year.

Again, I'm really glad you loved the book!

Dear Mr. Coville,
Our 4th grade class just finished reading Goblins in the Castle and we loved it!! We think it's neat that the idea of Igor's character came from you dressing up for your 4th grade students. Is there anyway we could see a picture of you dressed as Igor? We also think this book would make an awesome movie!
Sincerely,
4th graders who love Igor

To my pals in Mr. Roper's class:

Thanks for the message. I'm delighted that you enjoyed Goblins in the Castle. I had a blast writing that book, and I read the first version (years before it was published) to my own fourth graders back when I was a teacher.

Alas, the only picture we have of me dressed as Igor is not very good. I do wish I had a better one to show you.

I completely agree with you that this book would be good movie material.

Guess what! After twenty-some years, I have just written a sequel. This time Fauna is the narrator, and we learn the secret of the stone toad . . . and Fauna's secret, too. It's coming out next year, and it will be called Goblins on the Prowl.

Hi, Ja'Shanti -

Glad you like the books! "Inspiring and mysterious" is definitely part of what I'm trying for when I write them, so it makes me happy that you described them that way.

Hi Mr. Coville,
I'm a 28 year old with a Master's degree in English, and I just spent my morning re-reading The Ghost Wore Gray for probably the millionth time. I loved the Nina Tanleven books as a kid, and I still enjoy reading them because they remind me of discovering my love for books and reading. Your books helped to show me how magical the world of reading is, and I just wanted you to know how much they still mean to me with the biggest and sincerest THANK YOU!

Hi, Nicole -

Oh, what a delicious message! It is so nice to be remembered this way.

I published my 100th book a couple of years ago, but the ending of "The Ghost Wore Gray" remains, I think, the best closing pages I ever wrote. That you still love and continue to re-read this book totally delights me. Thanks for letting me know.

All best,

BC
