Welcome to the Guestbook!

I’m always eager to read your comments about my books and stories, so please feel free to pitch in. Here are a few things for you to know:

1) I answer the messages here personally.

2) No message shows up here until I actually answer it to prevent spam and other inappropriate postings. So there will sometimes be a delay before your message posts, especially if I am traveling.

3) Teachers, a gentle request: Please do not have multiple children send me variants of the same message. A group email is much easier to respond to and not such a drain on my time. My thanks in advance for being alert to this.

I loved your books as a child, and I still love them as an adult. I just wanted to thank you for using your talent to help inspire children to read.

Thanks for this, Thomas. It delights me to know that the books have stayed with you!

I have read a dozen or so of your books to my two boys over the last few months, and they just love them all. We just finished Aliens Ate My Homework. We all got a real kick out of Rod wearing a Camp Haunted Hills shirt. Thanks so much for writing so many wonderful books for me to share with my kids!

Hi, Eric -

Glad to know you and your boys are enjoying the books. Reading to my kids was one of the greatest joys of my parenting life, so I love finding out that other parents are sharing my own books with their kids.

Pleased to know you got a chuckle out of Rod's t-shirt. Rod is the only character I've ever based totally on myself, and my wife used pictures of me as guides for her art. I have a special fondness for Rod!

Tell your boys I said hello!

Have the card game 'the magic shop'four fast paced adventures, but sadly instructions missing. Have tried to find online, but no luck. Can you help. Youngest granddaughter now a fan. Thanks.
Reply by Bruce Coville
Hi, Sue - These are just regular playing cards, using the covers from the Magic Shop books as backing. So there are no instructions . . . just use them as you would any other deck to play standard card games.

Delighted to know that your granddaughter is now a fan!

Hi i'm Isabelle I really liked your book Dragon Of Doom I am on chapter 10 and I wanted to know if you could send me a copy in the mail once you respond back,I will send you my adress and where to send the book. I am eight years old, I got the book from my school library, and my librarian said that I could keep it for an extra week. So the book that i'm reading isn't mine, so that's why I wanted one of my own. I hope to see you in real life some day and you are an incredible writer!

Hi, Isabelle -

I'm delighted that you're enjoying THE DRAGON OF DOOM. I had so much fun writing that one! I can't just send you a book, but there is a page on the website that you can use to order a copy if you would like.

Thank you for the kind words about my writing!

I was going to tell you that you should make your magic shop series into movies. I love your books and would love to see them come to life. When I first learned about you I was in 3rd grade and me teacher read your magic shop series to me and now I'm in 8th grade almost highschool. One day I would like to publish a book. It would be an honor to hear back from you!
Sincerely, Calista

Hi, Calista -

Different producers have bought the rights to film the Magic Shop books a couple of times. They've just never managed to actually make the movies! Hollywood is very strange that way . . . film companies buy the rights to many, MANY more books than actually end up on the screen.

I keep hoping . . .

Glad to know that you still like the books!

Dear Bruce,
In the early 90's when I was 10 or so, remember the space brat series being my favorite books. Even now I still think about them. Now that I have three kids of my own I was thinking about them and thought "hey, let me see if I can find them because the kids would love them." So I headed up into the attic and searched through one of my old boxes and I found them. Space Brat 1 - 4. While 4 looked almost brand new, the first one clearly had some mileage. Anyway, to make a long story short I went online to find a new 1, and found that there was a 5 I never read. I am very excited to revisit my childhood with my own kids and just want to thank you for what I think is a very special moment.
Thanks
Mike

Hi, Michael --

Oh, man, this message delighted me, for two reasons. First, the SPACE BRAT books were some of the most fun writing I ever did. My wife (who did the art) and I had a blast creating those books. Second, one of my favorite things about being a dad was reading to my kids, and it thrills me beyond measure to know that someone like is now sharing my books with his own kids. Thanks for letting me know!
