Welcome to the Guestbook!

I’m always eager to read your comments about my books and stories, so please feel free to pitch in. Here are a few things for you to know:

1) I answer the messages here personally.

2) No message shows up here until I actually answer it to prevent spam and other inappropriate postings. So there will sometimes be a delay before your message posts, especially if I am traveling.

3) Teachers, a gentle request: Please do not have multiple children send me variants of the same message. A group email is much easier to respond to and not such a drain on my time. My thanks in advance for being alert to this.

Hi, Craig -

Delighted to know you loved BOOK OF NIGHTMARES. I think my own story in that book is the scariest one I ever wrote!

hi! i was reading yoru guestbook and noticed that a good number of them were from older people, is that weird to you? do you like to read children's books too? what are your favorite author. did you really work as a gravedigger?
Reply by Bruce Coville
Hi, L. -

Well, I've been publishing books for about 35 years now, so it makes sense that I would get some messages from older readers. It actually delights me to know that people who are 35 or 40 still remember something of mine from when they were in school. I would be much sadder if they had completely forgotten me! ;>

I was indeed a gravedigger. I didn't have much choice - my grandfather ran the cemetery and he needed me to help him!

Do you use a different publisher for all your books? Is it hard to find a publisher?
Reply by Bruce Coville
Hi, Isabella -

I have published with many different companies. It is VERY hard to find a publisher when you start out. After you have had some success it generally gets easier.

Lea from USA wrote on February 27, 2013:
Do you use the same process for every single book you write?
Reply by Bruce Coville
Hi, Lea -

Nope - over the years I have used many different approaches, from writing with a very tight outline to just sitting down to see what happens!

Zara from Sweden wrote on February 27, 2013:
Mr. Coville,
What part of the writing proccess is the most important?
Reply by Bruce Coville
Hi, Zara -

Well, all parts of the process are necessary, but if I had to select just one to focus on, it would be getting to know the characters. You can't care about what happens if you don't care about who it happens to!

Dear Mr. Coville,
Is your favorite part of writng a book the beginning of the book or the end of the book?
your Friend,
Reply by Bruce Coville
Hi, Zoey -

Oh, my favorite part is almost always getting to the end. At the beginning I am often struggling to understand the world and the characters. At the end there is often a great rush of words because my "dream brain" has put everything together so that the final part of the story just comes pouring out!

Hi, Chinmayi -

I loved visiting your school.

I'm sorry I did not answer before this. I am back in the states now . . . I was on a very tight schedule while I was in Africa!

Glad you liked "Biscuits of Glory" - it was fun to write!

I visited India once, and I would love to go back. It was one of my favorite trips ever.

I love books !!!
But I haven't read any of yours. Sometimes by backpack is sooooo heavy because it's filled to the rim with books.
Here are some questions:
What is it like to be an author?
Do you ever get tired of writing?
What gives you inspiration?
What is your favorite book?
What is your favorite genre?
What is the best book you have written?
My dad is from Holland and my mom is from Nigeria. I have one sister here name is Tara. She can finish books with one thousand pages in it in one day!!!!! I wish I could read like that!

Hi, Phoebe -

I enjoyed my visit to Abuja, and being in your school.

The best book I have written is THE LAST HUNT, the 4th book in the Unicorn Chronicles.

I also wish I could read like your sister!!
