March 31, 2025: Today is “Trans Day of Visibility” To support that, and my trans friends, I am offering this story, which I wrote in 1998 for an anthology edited by Lisa Rowe Fraustino called “DIRTY LAUNDRY: Stories about Family Secrets” It is, to the best of my knowledge, the first Trans-positive story ever published for the YA Market. You can access it at the link below . . .
I am a 30-something trans person that grew up reading The Unicorn Chronicles (and waiting eagerly–sometimes impatiently, perhaps–for the third book and beyond, which you’ve so thoughtfully delivered on 💗). Today, I came to your site after reminiscing about YA novels with a trans friend, and I just happened to see this post… And I don’t believe in coincidences anymore, so I’ll leave a message to say: It means the world to me to see and hear trans positivity from one of my favorite childhood authors–especially now, when so many things are being taken from trans children. Thank you, Mr. Coville. Wishing you and yours all the best!
Leaving some love for this post and gratitude for your support of TDOV! I realize it’s a bit late, but as my friends and I were talking about our favorite books from childhood and Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher came up for several of us – I figured I’d look you up and find that fabled ending to the Land of the Unicorns series. So pleasantly surprised to have found this post too!! Not sure there are good words for “thanks for having shaped my childhood imagination for the better” but – thanks <3
Thank you! I loved your books as a kid and would escape in them to be my weird little self. During the early days of COVID, your books were frequently read to my (trans) daughter.
Now that she’s older, she’s starting to read them to her little brother. Thank you for your support and being a consistently good person from my childhood through my kids.
