Welcome to the Guestbook!

I’m always eager to read your comments about my books and stories, so please feel free to pitch in. Here are a few things for you to know:

1) I answer the messages here personally.

2) No message shows up here until I actually answer it to prevent spam and other inappropriate postings. So there will sometimes be a delay before your message posts, especially if I am traveling.

3) Teachers, a gentle request: Please do not have multiple children send me variants of the same message. A group email is much easier to respond to and not such a drain on my time. My thanks in advance for being alert to this.

Hi, Sam -

Oh, heck . . . it took me 23 years to come up with the first sequel. You can't expect me to name a third book THIS soon! ;>

I started teaching at second grade, then moved to fourth grade, where I felt totally at home.

Look forward to seeing your picture of Herky!

Dear Bruce Coville,
Hello! My name is Meghan and I am in grade 5. My class just finished reading your book Goblins In The Castle and I/we all loved it! I wanted to ask you a few questions and give you a few comments for your awesome book. When you were writing Goblins In The Castle did you ever think that it would be published? How did you create the characters of the book? Could you relate yourself to anyone in the book? Those are the only questions I have so I'm now going to give you the comments. My favourite character was Herky because he had a good sense of humor, was very energetic, and he was honest. I also want to thank you for being an AMAZING author with a lot of imagination! I am looking forward to read the sequel for Goblins. Also I just wanted to say I love your description! Once again thank you for being the writer that you are,
Sincerely,
Meghan

Hi, Meghan -

Glad you loved GOBLINS! When I was writing it, I did think it would be published. Or, to be more precise, I HOPED it would be published. I wrote the first version in 1977, but it was almost 15 years later that I took it out of the file where it was stored, revised it, and found the right publisher.

When I taught 4th grade, I told me kids that Igor lived in the cellars under my house, and was only allowed out on his birthday, Halloween. So it was easy for me to relate to Igor.

Thanks for your lovely message,

BC

Hey Bruce coville I noticed you replied to my message and I am very happy to ask were can I get goblins on the prowl, can I get it of this website?
And also what do you think about doing a book 3 after GOBLINS ON THE PROWL maybe GOBLINS ON THE PEAK it could be about fauna, igor , and William go to the peak of toadinacage Castle and find the orb that keeps there town protected against any evil creatures and some goblins come and one bumps it and it falls and a big huge shield blows up and millions of mean older goblins come and attack. Sincerly , WYATT M
Reply by Bruce Coville
Hi, Wyatt -

Yep, you can buy GOBLINS ON THE PROWL directly from us. It's a little tricky, though, because the website is not set up for shipping to Canada. So the best thing for you to do is write to accounts@fullcastaudio.com and my bookkeeper can figure out the postage and you can work out how to get the book. I will, of course, be happy to autograph it ffor you.

I don't know if I'll write a third book or not. I like your title idea though!

All best,

Hi, Olivia -

I'm glad you're enjoying JEREMY THATCHER! I love writing those cliffhanger endings. Sometimes they come naturally, other times I have to work to find the exact right way to end a chapter.

Please tell your teacher that I said hello, and give her my thanks for sharing my book with you all!

Dear Mr. Coville,
I have a couple questions for you! How did you come up with the plot of the story for Goblins in the Castle? Also, my favorite part is when Willam and Igor meet because they were maent to be friends!

Hi, Chloe -

Oh, it took me YEARS to come up with the plot for GOBLINS. I wrote the first draft of the book in 1977. Then, because it didn't work, I put it away for a long time. It wasn't until 1991 that I finally pulled it out again and figured out how to make it work!

Dear Bruce,
How old was Igor when you met him? My favorite part of the book is when William first met him can you please make a third sequel. where William and his family get back together and his parents meat Igor and they fight the goblins.
Reply by Bruce Coville
Hi, Sam -

There are many secrets about Igor (he really is mysterious!) so there is not much I can tell you about him.

You are the first person to ask me about a third book. I have been thinking about that . . . but since there were 23 years (!) between the first book and the second, I am not sure I will live long enough to write third one! ;>

Dear Bruce Coville,
My name is Meg and I am in grade 6. My teacher read your book, "Goblins in the Castle", to us and I really enjoyed it. There are rarely books that I really get hooked on but this one book that you wrote was really, really, really good. I really liked this book because it was very interesting. I also liked all of the characters because they all had their own personality such as William, Igor, Herky, Fauna, and many more! I would like to know if you will be writing any more of the "Goblins in the Castle" books? I would like to tell you that this year my class is going to try and only read books by you. Finally, we really enjoy reading your books and hope you write many more.
From,
Meg

Hi, Meg -

I'm delighted to know that you enjoyed GOBLINS so much. I have written more than a hundred books, but this is probably the one that is most like what I thought I would be writing when I started out.

Though it was meant to be a "stand-alone" book, I recently returned to the world of Nilbog with GOBLINS ON THE PROWL. But to keep things interesting, I switched narrators. This time the story is told by Fauna, and we learn some startling things about her!

Hi!!!!!😋 I read your short story Old Glory. I just wanted to tell you how good it was. I loved the irony of the uniforms of the Uncles. And how a phase that meant Save Our Souls, now it means Shoot on Sight. You have a very good sense of irony and I loved all of the hidden meaning. Now to the questions!
How did you come up with the idea for this? It's a very unique thing, where in the future no one has freedom.
Why did you set in the near future?
What other book have you written like this one?
How long and how many drafts does it take to write a short story? I know that each paragraph and every word I'd very important because there is not much room to write anything not important.
Thanks

Hi, E.T. -

Thanks for this insightful response to "Old Glory." You clearly understood the story very well.

How did I come up with the idea? I usually write from a happy place. This is the only story I can remember writing from pure rage, when the first President Bush was pushing for a constitutional amendment to ban flag burning - which, to my mind, was trashing the First Amendment for some short term political gain.

I can't remember how many drafts I did for this, as it was quite a long time ago. I've never done less than three drafts, and usually it is many more than that. My most recent book had about 15 drafts.

So what's up? I love your book called "Goblins In The Castle." Pretty much all of it was funny and I also could visualize the pictures and words in my head as my teacher read us the book. Good job getting popular!

Hi, Joey -

Glad you loved GOBLINS. I've written over a hundred books, and this remains one of my personal favorites, so it delights me to know it worked for you. I love writing about Igor!

Dear Bruce
In your SCIFI short story Old Glory why did you include the part when Gran-Da was high up and waving the flag it seemed real almost too real. I was wondering if you had a personal connection to someone dying for what they believe in perhaps a relative in the war.
Reply by Bruce Coville
Hi, Connor -

I will take "it seemed real almost too real" as a compliment. Part of what this story is about is what a man might do to stand up for what he believes.

No personal connection to someone who has done this, but I read history and there are many who have died for waht they believe in.
