Welcome to the Guestbook!

I’m always eager to read your comments about my books and stories, so please feel free to pitch in. Here are a few things for you to know:

1) I answer the messages here personally.

2) No message shows up here until I actually answer it to prevent spam and other inappropriate postings. So there will sometimes be a delay before your message posts, especially if I am traveling.

3) Teachers, a gentle request: Please do not have multiple children send me variants of the same message. A group email is much easier to respond to and not such a drain on my time. My thanks in advance for being alert to this.

I love Goblins in the Castle because when Fauna, William and Herkey went in the forest and Granny Pinchbottom gave William the amulet, food, and invisibility cloak. If you can make a sequel I would love that because everyone loves your book.

Hi, Bella -

I DID make a sequel. And it only took me 23 years (yike!). It's called GOBLINS ON THE PROWL and this time Fauna tells the story . . . and reveals her Big Secret in the process.

Dear,Mr. Bruce Colville,
I LOVE your book 'Goblins In The Castle'. Bruce have you ever walked or stood in misty rain if you have that's what your book was like each drop was a drop of happy , funny , tension , and amusement. My favorite part in the book was when William stands on the goblins table and says 'IGOR IS MY FREIND!'.i have a question what was your inspiration for the book besides Igor?
Bye,
Hannah!

Hi, Hannah -

Wow! I soooo loved this message. Your simile about the book like being in a misty rain and what all the droplets were like went straight to my heart. I think it is one of the best compliments I have ever received.

My inspiration for the book (besides Igor) would have to be all the great fantasy adventures that I had read in all the years before I wrote it. I am always trying to write a book I would have wanted to read myself.

Thanks for this lovely message,

BC

Dear Bruce Coville,
I love your book "Goblins in the Castle!"
My favourite part of Goblins in the Castle is when Igor hit William on the head with his bear for the first time. It was so funny. Also Herky is my favorite character, he is HILARIOUS!!! How did you come up with the character Herky?
Thanks for reading my letter!

Erika

Hi, Erika -

Thanks for this message. Glad you loved the book.

As to Herky - the truth is, he was a desperation measure. I needed a "cliffhanger" chapter ending, so I had =something= jump out of the bushes and grab William. I didn't know, when I wrote that, how funny and lively Herky would turn out to be!

Dear Mr. Coville,
I love your book Goblins in the Castle. My favourite part is when William meets Igor. I like this part because Igor is such a funny and interesting character. I just wanted to ask, where did you get the inspiration for your characters? Thanks for reading.

Eilidh

Hi, Eilidh -

I am so happy that you loved the book. As I wrote in the Author's Note, IGOR had been a large and strange part of my life from well before I started the story. Because IGOR is so strange, we try not to talk about where he came from.

The other characters came, I think, from a lifetime of reading fantasy novels. The Baron, Hulda, and Karl are my versions of kind of standard characters in other books that I had loved.

I LOVED the Unicorn Chronicles when I was a kid, and even finished reading the last 2 when they come out (in my 20s)! I would love to have your signature in my books, but you're never nearby. Would you be willing to send signed bookplates via SASE? I could even design and print them for you!!! Please consider it 🙂 But I know you're busy. Thanks!

Hi, Liz -

I would be more than happy to sign bookplates via SASE. You can send them to the PO Box listed under the CONTACT button on the website.

Glad to know you were able to get and read the last two books in the series!

Hey Bruce what where you on Halloween I know I all ready ask you this but what were you on Halloween your friend Bobby
Reply by Bruce Coville
Hi, Bobby -

I was kind of a monsterish guy. I have a full head skull mask with horns, and I wear that with a long black cape that makes for a simple but wonderfully creepy costume!

Hope you had a good Halloween. What were you?

Dear Mr.Coville
Our teacher read us your book called Goblins in the Castle. We would like to know will you be making a second book. Also, about Igor the guy in your book, what do you mean about him being your half mad twin brother? Please write back thank you.
Reply by Bruce Coville
Hi, Preston -

I DID write a second book . . . a mere 23 years after the first! It's called GOBLINS ON THE PROWL, and it came out last June.

There are things about Igor that I am not allowed to explain.

I want to know if you are going to make a another book of Goblins in the Castle. I love your books and I love Herky and the way he talks. Why is Ishmael in the book? what was he doing and what is his purpose? Granny Pinchbottom is amazing.
Reply by Bruce Coville
Hi, Logan -

The second book came out this summer. It's called GOBLINS ON THE PROWL. This time Fauna tells the story! No Ishmael, but more about Granny Pinchbottom.

Hi, Owen -

Glad you loved GOBLINS. (Now turn off the CAPS LOCK! LOL)

I did do a second book - it came out this summer, so it is too late to put in your name. Sorry about that.
