Welcome to the Guestbook!

I’m always eager to read your comments about my books and stories, so please feel free to pitch in. Here are a few things for you to know:

1) I answer the messages here personally.

2) No message shows up here until I actually answer it to prevent spam and other inappropriate postings. So there will sometimes be a delay before your message posts, especially if I am traveling.

3) Teachers, a gentle request: Please do not have multiple children send me variants of the same message. A group email is much easier to respond to and not such a drain on my time. My thanks in advance for being alert to this.

Hi Bruce!,
I really enjoyed your
science fiction short story, Old Glory! It was a great story and made me wonder many things, like will that stuff really happen in the future. I'm planing to read more of you stories and get to know you better.

I read your great science fiction book "OLd GLory" and I thought it was fantastic! However, do think this type of thing will actually happen in the future?

Hi, Matthew -

Glad you liked "Old Glory" Do I think this kind of thing will happen in the future? Well, I think it's possible. One of the purposes of science fiction is to get people thinking about this kind of thing, and warn them against it!

what has been your all time favorite book you have written so far and how did you get inspired to write it?
Reply by Bruce Coville
Riri! That's like asking which of my children I love the most! ;>

The book that is my favorite (I won't name it) came about because my wife - who illustrates many of my books - asked me to write it. I am not dumb . . . when my wife asks me to write a story, I do so! ;>

What made you shoes the year 2041 and the theme of the book. Love the way you wrote it by the way (Old Glory)

Hi Sandra -

Glad you liked "Old Glory"

As to why I chose 2041 - I was asked to write a story for a book with that name!

Hey Bruce!!
How long does it take you to write a short story?
Reply by Bruce Coville
Hi, Kristina -

If you asked "How long does it take to make a birdhouse" I could answer you, if I was using the same pattern over and over. But stories are not like that. Every story has its own time and rhythm. Once I started a story in 1978 (wrote the first page) and finished it more than 20 years later! Other stories I have written in a single day.

Every story is different, every story has its own story!

Hi, Kristina -

Well, I once wrote a short story in about an hour and it's one of my best. On the other hand, one story (another really good one, I think) took about fifteen years between the time I wrote the first page and the time I wrote the end!

Hey Bruce, read your short story "Old Glory" and was wondering why use laser rifles instead of normal guns?
Reply by Bruce Coville
Hi, Eli -

I had the SOS guys use laser rifles because the story is set in the future, and it is very likely that rifle technology will have changed radically by that time.

Hello Bruce,
My name is George. I read your short story Old Glory. I bet you've received a lot of reviews today and I think you'd enjoy mine. If this was a book I'd read it twice. I'll look for more books by you because I greatly enjoy sci fi. Also, I performed in dragonslayers a very nice play.
Sincerely George
